Propolis

Botanical name: nil (bee product)
Common name: Propolis
Part used: nil (bee product)

Propolis is a natural product gathered by honey bees which is secreted by trees on leaf buds and bark. In trees, the resin acts as a protective barrier, helping to protect developing buds from bacteria and fungi and sealing and protecting wounds. Bees use the resin for similar reasons in their hives, as a ‘mortar’ for small cracks and as a protection against bacterial growth.

Propolis is naturally high in substances called flavonoids, which are powerful antioxidants and are believed to be particularly important for the anti bacterial activity of Propolis.

Research has indicated that Propolis may even be effective against some bacteria which are resistant to conventional antibiotics.
