Propolis

Botanical name: nil (bee product)
Common name: Propolis
Part used: nil (bee product)

Propolis is a natural product gathered by honeybees which is secreted by trees on leaf buds and bark. In trees, the resin acts as a protective barrier, helping to protect developing buds from bacteria and fungi and sealing and protecting wounds. Bees use the resin for similar reasons in their hives, as a ‘mortar’ for small cracks and as a protection against bacterial growth.

Propolis is naturally high in substances called flavonoids, which are powerful antioxidants and are believed to be particularly important for the anti-bacterial activity of Propolis.

Research has indicated that Propolis may even be effective against some bacteria which are resistant to conventional antibiotics.
