January Health Focus: Cognitive Decline

Mild cognitive slowing is a normal part of aging, where significant or progressive changes occur, it may be linked to neurodegenerative conditions like Alzheimer’s disease.

The most common cause of dementia. Alzheimer’s affects memory, clarity and the ability to carry out everyday tasks. With an aging population, its prevalence in the community continues to rise.

The good news. Research shows that early, supportive strategies can help maintain cognitive function and promote long-term brain health. Herbs can play a key part.

Herbal Support for Cognitive Aging

One of the most well-researched herbs for cognitive health. It works by improving blood flow to the brain, which enhances oxygen and nutrient delivery to brain cells.

Known for its memory-enhancing and brain-boosting properties.  Bacopa contains powerful compounds called bacosides that support the repair of damaged brain cells and improves the communication between these cells.

A well-known adaptogenic herb that helps the body adapt to stress while boosting mental and physical energy.  It contains active compounds called ginsenosides, which have brain-protective and anti-inflammatory effects.

It stimulates the production of nerve growth factor, a protein vital for the growth, maintenance and survival of neurons.  This makes it particularly promising for nerve regeneration and repair, helping to restore brain function in the early stages of cognitive decline.

Everyday Strategies to Support Brain Health

Social connection

Social engagement is a known protective factor against cognitive decline. People with diverse social interactions tend to have greater gray matter volume, which is vital for memory and decision making.

Cognitive stimulation

Mentally stimulating activities including reading, puzzles and sudoku, enhance neuroplasticity and build a functional reserve of neurons against future cell loss.
